A subtle break, a cause for variable end-tidal gas analysis.

چکیده

The patient was having a minor procedure undertaken under general anaesthetic and was self-ventilating via a laryngeal mask. Constant gas flows and volatile agent concentration were used and the patient’s minute ventilation remained constant. However, ETCO2 values, as measured by Hewlett Packard M1026A gas analyser (Hewlett Packard, Berkshire, UK), varied between 22 and 43 mmHg. Initially no cause for these discrepancies could be found but when the patient was manually ventilated with high flows an audible leak was heard. The location of this leak was initially difficult to find but on close inspection of the capnography tubing at the patient end a complete break was noted (Fig. 1).

Background : Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) represents a major public health problem. The course of COPD is characterized by episodic periods of worsening symptoms, termed exacerbations. Supplemental oxygen should be given to patients with COPD exacerbation without causing CO2 retention. Arterial blood gas sampling is the gold standard for monitoring adequate oxygenation and for...

Simple contrivance "clamps" end-tidal PCO(2) and PO(2) despite rapid changes in ventilation.

The device described in this study uses functionally variable dead space to keep effective alveolar ventilation constant. It is capable of maintaining end-tidal PCO(2) and PO(2) within +/-1 Torr of the set value in the face of increases in breathing above the baseline level. The set level of end-tidal PCO(2) or PO(2) can be independently varied by altering the concentration in fresh gas flow. T...

Standardization and Validation of Non-invasive Monitoring of End Tidal Carbon Dioxide in Neonates via Nasal Cannula: An Observational Study

Background: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a by-product of cellular metabolism, which could be considered as a reflection of metabolism, circulation, and ventilation. Arterial blood gas analysis (ABG) is the gold standard of monitoring for CO2. However, is an expensive method leading to blood loss and iatrogenic anemia. In addition, each sample is only a...

The Diagnostic Value of End-tidal Carbon Dioxide (EtCO2) and Alveolar Dead Space (AVDS) in Patients with Suspected Pulmonary Thrombo-embolism (PTE)

Introduction: Capnography, is an easy, fast and practical method which its application in the diagnosis of Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) has recently been studied. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) and the alveolar dead space (AVDS) in the diagnosis of patients suspected to PTE who have been referred to the emergency department. Materials and Metho...
